How we use assessment
In my tutoring sessions, assessment isn't a stressful, high-stakes event. It’s a natural, ongoing part of how we learn together. I focus on assessment for learning, a dynamic approach where we constantly check in to see how your child is progressing and what support they need next.
How We'll Gauge Progress
I don’t rely on traditional tests. Instead, I use a variety of simple, low-pressure methods to get a clear picture of your child's understanding. This includes:
Asking Targeted Questions: I'll ask open-ended questions that encourage your child to explain their thought process, which helps me identify any areas of confusion.
Observing Their Work: As your child works through problems, I'll pay close attention to where they hesitate or get stuck. This provides real-time feedback on their learning journey.
Using Quick Activities: We might use mini-quizzes or whiteboard exercises for a quick, informal check. These are fun, engaging ways to spot and correct any misconceptions immediately.

Adaptive Learning:
IXL is an online learning platform that provides practice questions and resources for students from reception to Year 13. It is designed to supplement classroom learning by offering a huge range of exercises that cover the UK national curriculum. This may be used for some sessions after discussion.
IXL uses an adaptive learning approach. When a child answers questions, the system adjusts the difficulty in real-time. If a child answers correctly, the questions get harder; if they answer incorrectly, they get easier.

Real-Time Feedback:
The purpose of these check-ins is to gather information that will directly benefit your child. I provide specific, actionable feedback that goes beyond a simple grade. I will tell them exactly what they’re doing well and, most importantly, what the next steps are.
My goal is to make sure our sessions are always focused on your child's unique needs, and that they feel supported and confident every step of the way.

Mock tests
For a child preparing for the 11+, mock tests are an invaluable tool. They're much more than just a practice exam; they are a critical part of our tutoring strategy. They help me, and you, understand exactly where your child stands and what we need to focus on to get them ready for exam day.
Sitting a full-length test in a realistic environment helps your child overcome nerves and get used to the pressure. By the time they face the real exam, the process will feel familiar and much less daunting.
